Smartphones have provided us with a lot more options for communication than just text messaging and phone calls. Messenger apps have been invading both the Google Play and Apple App Store and they just keep on coming. Developers are also still continuing to update their applications to provide new and exciting features for their users.
One of the most popular messaging apps today is Voxer. Like with most communication or social applications, you can chat, send pictures and leave voice messages here.
What would make Voxer a good choice among a sea of other social applications?
For starters, Voxer has a PTT or Push-To-Talk feature which is similar to the Walkie-Talkies. This feature is quite unique, since most messaging apps simply record your voice mail and can only be sent once you are done recording. But in Voxer, the receiver can hear the message of the sender in real-time. It still also leaves the option for the receiver to listen to the message at a later time since the voice message is still recorded.
It’s also easy to share a Voxer message through other means, such as: email, SMS, and social media. You can even share your profile. Another thing that’s easy to share in Voxer is your location so you can easily let your friends know where you are. The one catch though is that it’s only available for iOS users as of now. Another useful property of this app (Premium Edition only) is the ability to delete sent messages. Voxer has also followed the direction of its competitors by having its own website, thereby allowing continuous chat among different devices, including desktop.
What make Voxer even cooler is that it is integrated in the Samsung Gear S2. The PTT is included in this merge, so Gear S2 users can simply push a button to send a message and the receiver will get a notification that a message has been received. If you’re familiar with Chester Gould’s Dick Tracy, that’s pretty much the idea. Gear S2 users are also able to view photos and text messages and scroll through their contacts list to send new messages.
Discussions have been opened recently whether the Push-To-Talk feature will soon be available in Google Hangouts since Kola has joined the Google team. According to his LinkedIn Profile, George Kola, software engineer and Chief Technology Officer of Voxer for more than a year, has joined Google since February of this year. In the Google Products forum, there have been a few requests for the PTT to be a feature for Hangouts. But still, details of the future updates for the Hangouts remain unknown and can merely be speculated.
Who's Voxer for?
We can say that the Voxer is the communication or social application for people in a rush who want to leave a quick and easy message via PTT. It is also ideal for those who are a fan of wearables as it is already integrated with two of the most popular smartwatches. Voxer is also a useful app for organizations that need to talk in real-time between employees but would also need an archive for their conversations, e.g. taxi drivers.
