You most likely already know Indiegogo — being a crowd funding site, you can expect to find great ideas that are just about to emerge from the market (given, of course, that many people will support it). Every once in a while we’ll have a look at some of the most interesting finds.
HUB by Ekko – what is it?
Now, this is neat! The HUB by Ekko enables you to share audio with multiple simultaneous listeners using any earbuds, headphones or powered speakers. The idea is a “social” listening experience, i.e.: several people can hear the same audio – but on their own preferred headphones.
And what can I do with it?
The HUB is, well, a powered hub, which sends audio signals via Wi-Fi to multiple receivers. These receivers provide a headphone plug where you can plug in your favorite headphones. Up to 10 people can enjoy the same audio source this way in a range of 15m (50 ft) in a real world range, which should cover even being not in the same room. On sight the range is said to be 30m (100 ft).
This means that you can e.g. watch a film as a family together and if you need a sandwich you can go to the kitchen and won`t miss a word. While you can adjust the volume directly on the HUB, you can also do several adjustments in a software app, e.g. separate equalizing. The software app enables you also to set a maximum volume – especially interesting if you have children that use the HUB.
To remember “your” HUB with its own adjustments, you can adjust the color of it via the app. Looks good and comes in handy in families or other larger groups, e.g. flat-sharing communities.
- HUB supports wireless audio transfer standards like DLNA and AirPlay, but the input doesn’t need to be wireless, there is a 3.5mm input plus optical inputs on the HUB.
- Ekko promises low latency streaming of 96kHz / 24bit audio – which means studio quality. Ekko is sure that it will “satisfy the needs of the most demanding listeners”.
- The HUB is said to have a runtime of 4.5 hours – needless to say that wireless charging is a no-brainer.
- HUB comes in three flavors: Standard (4 users), Mini (2 users) and Solo (1 user)
Why would I need this?
If you’re listening to any kind of audio together with someone else, this is for you. This could be streaming services like Apple Music or Spotify, but also the sound of a computer game, turntables, …
